Product/service description

Tribosonics uses patented technology jointly developed at the University of Sheffield and the University of Bristol for the measurement of thin layers using ultrasonic reflection. This technology, known as Ultrasensor, has been proven in an assortment of field trials and laboratory experiments.

Thin layers, both solid and liquid, are found in many places both in nature and in engineering. These thin layers provide a range of functions, primarily in lubrication, but also in thermal cooling, component separation and bonding. Understanding these layers, particularly their thickness, is crucial to better design and reliability. Often these layers are inaccessible, squashed between two other components and are remarkably difficult to measure. Tribosonics Ltd is the world leader in measuring these layers in a huge range of applications.

The name Tribosonics comes from the combination of Tribology and Ultrasonics. Tribology is the study of friction, wear and lubrication and comes from the Greek ‘tribos’ meaning rubbing. Ultrasonic techniques have been used for many years as a non-destructive technique for analysing and monitoring mechanical components. Tribosonics is the combination of these areas of engineering to develop a set of powerful techniques for monitoring, measuring and investigating a wide range of real world engineering applications.
